Description

What you'll learn in this sculpture class:

Basic and advanced techniques of direct stone carving - initial roughing out, developing a form, final finishing and polishing are presented. There is a choice of softer stone or marble. Hand and pneumatic tools are both covered. Participants should end the course with the basic knowledge necessary to work on their own.

Instruction is individually oriented so that all levels of experience will benefit from this great opportunity. Students will choose the subject matter of their sculpture and learn to find what's in the stone.

Please Note:
  • Monthly class cost of tuition includes one session per week with instructor, sculpture stand to work on, and storage of your piece during the month you’ve paid for.
  • If applicable, for monthly classes you will have access to studio hours during regular store hours, as long as no other class is being held at the time.
  • All monthly registered students receive a 10% discount on TCS in-store purchases.
  • Basic tools - hammer, chisels and table - are included in the class fee. But students will need to purchase their own stone.
  • Students may buy their own tools should they wish to continue. Any other specialty items would be purchased by the students.

Love this class. I have not sculpted before, but I feel confident I will love my piece when it is done thanks to Douglas. He is patient and spends a lot of time giving great direction. Already signed up for another series .

Doug is a good, patient teacher. He made sure to make eye contact with me, which was very helpful because I have a profound hearing loss. The classroom is very HOT. The school needs to install several large fans immediately. or, better still, air conditioning.

I truly enjoyed the class. Very freeform and casual with just the right amount of instruction and assistance from the teacher. Some loaner tools available and stone must be purchased separately. Also the location at “The Compleat Sculptor “ enhances the experience.

Hi, what kind of stone are we going to carve? Can I bring my own stone such as calcite or marble? And what kind of tools we going to use? Kindly advise :)

Hi, Yes, of course, you can bring your own stone! We provide some hand tools for use during the class, but if you need specialized tools, you may bring them or buy them onsite. Please let me know if you have any other questions or require more information.

Question from Matthew m.
If I’m more interested in carving geometric type sculptures with less curves and more sharp angles which instructor would you recommend, Ailene or Douglas? Thanks! :)
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Matthew! As per The Compleat Sculptor, either is very capable of teaching geometric shapes, but Ailene’s class has the greatest number of diverse projects going on. Hope this helps!

How much typically is the stone that must be purchased by the students and can the stone be purchased there?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Matthew! The students have complete control over the size of stone that they choose to purchase depending on their project, from very small to Monumental. An average would be $40-$125. Hope this helps!

Question from Jacqueline B.
Do you get a certificate or some sort of documentation after course completion?
Answer from Elizabeth M. Verified Student
No. It's just an art course, mostly self-directed. You learn some techniques on night one and are expected to work on your piece in and outside of class. It can take 6 months - 1 year to complete a piece if you're only working on it during class time.
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Jacqueline! This is not an accredited class and is project oriented. Students may or may not complete a piece in a single month depending on its size and complexity as well as their skill set and desire. There is no certificate provided but if someone really wanted one, the school could create one once they participated in the class.

Question from Seth Q.
What's the difference between Stone Carving w/ Douglas Breitbart and Stone Carving w/ Ailene Fields?
Answer from Seth Q. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
They do definitely have different styles, but they are both capable of handling either style. The classes are very individually tailored, so people do all kinds of work in both classes. It is not like a class where everyone is doing the same thing. Each participant chooses their own direction. They are both great teachers, so really I would think it is more about convenient scheduling.
