More than a Hipster Touchstone: Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea"
When the skies crack open and Jehovah appears -- angry that we have destroyed the planet, waged war on one another, and supported Adam Sandler movies -- I will brave the storm and the screaming and climb the mount with a copy of Neutral Milk Hotel's seminal 1998 album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea and a really good pair of headphones and God will learn what I know to be true -- that because of THIS work of art, humanity should be spared destruction.
Join me for a two hour Olio where we look closely at the supreme poetry of the printed out lyrics for 75 minutes, and then, armed with a better understanding of what is going on, listen to the whole 40 minute album, and remember for a second what it is to be whole.
