COURSE WITHDRAWALS

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must notify the CAPS Office in writing. Instructors are not permitted OR able to process withdrawals, transfers or refunds.

MAKE-UP POLICY

If a student misses a session, the department unfortunately does not authorize the student to make up that missed session in another section. If the instructor informs the student to visit another section of his class, then that is between the student and the instructor.

Instructor rarely gets into the pool for providing instruction. It would be beneficial , if the instructor is in the pool more often to give demonstrations.

Question from Juju
Hello, I am a senior citizen and I have taken a beginners class and I am able to float back and front, perform a basic backstroke but need more in breathing coordination with swimming forward and I am not so good treading water. I believe I am good with most basics but am fearful of the deep water. Will this class help me to overcome that?
Answer from Michelle S. Verified Student
Hi Juju, I took the class on Thursdays & they practiced both treading & breathing in this class as well as practicing strokes. But I would suggest mentioning ahead of time to the teacher that you need to focus on treading & breathing so they know what you need to practice.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Juju! The instructor said, "I think the beginners class will be good for this person. It is hard to tell how good their skills are by what they write since their perception of swimming might be different from a professional perspective. I would advise beginners for now since this person does need to learn rotary breathing and get comfortable in the deep end." Hope this helps!

Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi there! The instructor/coach suggests you take the Intermediate Swim class - they do laps and work on strokes. You may check the class here https://coursehorse.com/nyc/classes/life-skills/sports/swimming/intermediate-swim. Hope this helps!

Question from Wendy W.
I’m a confident free form swimmer. I can easily float and tread water and Feel fine in the pool as well as in rivers, lakes, or the ocean. I want to learn strokes and how to swim for fitness- would this class teach me these things?
Answer from Jessica P. Verified Student
You’re probably better off taking the intermediate course. When I took this course, most of the students had limited swimming skills so we worked mainly on how to tread water and freestyle. May be a bit redundant if you already can do these things comfortably.

Question from Yusun H.
I can’t really swim. During the vacation, I swimmed with a snorkeling mask. Without it, I can’t even breath. Is this advanced beginner class too advanced for me?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Yusun! The instructor suggested that you take the Beginner Swimming class. You can check it here: https://coursehorse.com/nyc/classes/life-skills/sports/swimming/beginner-swimming Hope this helps!

Question from Anonymous
I took swim lessons when I was a young child, and spent time in the water growing up, but haven't for many years (about 25 years). I remember how to float, and basic strokes, but I'm not sure I can even do them properly anymore. Is this class for me, or should I join the beginner's (non-advanced) course?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi! According to the instructor, she thinks the beginner class will be ideal for you since you have not swum in 25 years and can only float. The advanced class is for individuals who have an idea of treading and can tread in shallow water and are not afraid of the deep end.
