Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this swimming lesson:

Students will perfect stroke mechanics, learn front and back crawl, and work with a trainer to improve technique.

Students who already know the basics will rise to the level of lap swimming. A swimming cap is mandatory.

Please Note: The pool is only available during class hours.

Classroom location listings are also posted outside the CAPS office and the lobby of the 17 Lexington Avenue building.

Refund Policy

Students MUST submit a detailed written request to withdraw from a course, which CourseHorse will then forward on to the school. The request must state the reason of cancellation.

Refunds or credits are available: Full refund or credit if request to withdraw is made 3 business days before the first class session. 50% refund or credit if request to withdraw is made before the second class session. After the second class session no refunds or credits will be granted.

No refunds or credits will be issued for classes that meet four sessions or fewer. Classes include seminars, intensives and workshops.

All refunds will have a $25 processing fee deducted from the course refund as well as a $20 registration fee ($45 total).

When Baruch College cancels a course, refunds are made automatically. If for any reason the department cancels a session, then a make-up session will be offered.

COURSE WITHDRAWALS

Students who wish to withdraw from a course must notify the CAPS Office in writing. Failure to complete a course, ceasing to attend class, notifying the instructor of your desire to withdraw, or general dissatisfaction with a course does not constitute a withdrawal and does not entitle you to a refund. Instructors are not permitted OR able to process withdrawals, transfers or refunds.

MAKE-UP POLICY

If a student misses a session, the department unfortunately does not authorize the student to make up that missed session in another section. If the instructor informs the student to visit another section of his class, then that is between the student and the instructor.

Question from Michelle S.
I know how to do Freestyle & Backstroke. I would like to learn Butterfly & Breaststroke. I took the Advance Beginners & was disappointed that the instructor focused on very basics of Freestyle. Which class teaches the other styles & strokes?
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Michelle! The Intermediate class teaches the breaststroke and butterfly kick but only after a few weeks, the course has started. Most of the students we get in Intermediate are starting to build stamina so I would say 80% of the class focuses on freestyle and backstroke and building stamina. The full stroke for breaststroke and butterfly are tough in Swim Clinic because by them students are strong and well-coordinated to learn the full stroke. Even then, the class still focuses 70% on freestyle and endurance. Hope this helps!

Question from tracy p.
Are the facilities still cold and unkempt?
Answer from tricia s. Verified Student
Yes
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
The Baruch pool is a competitive pool and temperature needs are equal to or less than 82 degrees, any warmer and swimmer may overheat in the water and their performance may suffer. Temperatures in the low 80s and high 70s are also recommended for adult aerobic lap swimming. Unfortunately, as a beginner swimmer, they may feel the temperature more since they are not moving aerobically as the more advanced swimmers. At this point, the pool is kept between 78 and 80 degrees.
Answer from Brenda L. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
As per the facility being unkempt, Baruch have many students going through the fitness courses with very little to no complaints. However, if the student would like to visit the facility, they can come in and do so. Baruch would recommend that they inform security that they would like to possibly join the gym and wanted to go downstairs to gather more information.

Question from Gitanjali N.
What’s the difference between this class and advanced beginner swimmer?
Answer from tricia s. Verified Student
I’m sorry Annie I just took one course, so I can’t compare. I think intermediate has more laps n dives. I liked the lessons at waterside towers with David
Answer from Georgia C. CourseHorse StaffCourseHorse Staff
Hi Annie! The intermediate swimming course is for an individual who knows how to swim but would like to improve on becoming more of a lap swimmer and some technical skills.
