FAQs

What are some of your most popular classes that you offer on CourseHorse?
Our shoemaking classes, watercolor, jewelry, ceramics and silk painting classes tend to be most popular.

How long have you been in business? Can you share a bit more about your history?
The JCC art studios have been business for 14 years this 2016. The JCC was created as a community center to serve the needs of the community, and part of that was ensuring the community have space to feel welcome being creative. The art studios have been here since the building opened and have been a huge part of countless community members lives.

What is your average class size?
Our jewelry classes are maximum eight, our painting/drawing classes are a maximum of 10, and our ceramics classes are a maximum of 10.

What is your typical student like? What are their goals?
Our students are typically those who want to find a creative outlet in a warm, welcoming community. It is as much a social and community experience as it is an art class. We have students of all types, but I think for the most part their goals are to learn something new, have a great time, find and express their creativity and find a community that is welcoming and non-competitive.

Can you recommend activities to do in the neighborhood before or after class?
The JCC is located on the Upper West Side, which hosts tons of bars and restaurants, the beacon theatre, and lots of shopping, as well as the American Museum of Natural History and the New York History Society.

Notes:
Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan, while we are a Jewish community center, nothing about our art classes are religious and all are welcome in our building at all times.

Silk Painting

This clan was very fun, and I ended up with a beautiful scarf at the end! A things to keep in mind: first, you’re working with dyes, so wear old clothes! Second, these scarves need to be set with steam for a few hours, so you won’t be able to take yours home immediately. You’ll be able to either pay Suzanna a few dollars to have it mailed to you, or you can pick it up at her home.

Karen is great at explaining and guiding the class into practice. Everything she covered was relevant and to the point, and she did a great job at teaching the maximum possible in the 2 and a half hours we had. The only place where I see room for improvement is that there's no follow up class. Me and several participants were convinced that at least two classes should be the minimum to really be able to get comfortable with practicing the basics, and would be happy to pay the cost.

Really loved it. Wish there was a follow-on class. I liked just having one class to initially commit to to see if I would like Knitting, I do, and now don't want to lose what I have learned, nor our great teacher, and want to do more soon (before I forget the basics I am trying to practice).

Really enjoyable class! You will pick up some great skills and have plenty of time to complete several pottery pieces. There is a nice, easy going dynamic in the class and all participants & the instructor were really friendly. I highly recommend!

This is a good first class or for someone who is returning to knitting after years of not knitting. I enjoyed the instructor's relaxed teaching style and the reinforcement of concepts. She also made sure we mastered a stitch before moving on to something new. She was professional, informative and friendly. I just wish the class was longer than one 3 hour session. Maybe think of extending it to a series of weeks.

Watercolor and Illustration: Trial Class

Absolutely terrific...MARIKA so well organized..everything ready to go from the minute class started and she progressed in such a way (using wet on wet and offering explainations for how to connect so as to see the colors mixing or to place colored circles a bit apart so as not to mix colors) that as we moved from one project to another, she referred back to those earlier moments. She walked around many, many times and was always available to answer questions. It was a trial class and the follow up full course is at night. A couple of us have called the JCC raving about the class and we had other friends who would be interested in such a course also call or email asking that such a course be offered during the day....would be popular for older students.

Really enjoyable intro class. I would definitely recommend as you have plenty of time to learn about pottery, get your hands dirty and create something for yourself. Instruction was great and the atmosphere of the class was really friendly.
