This workshop will examine representations of the female body throughout art history, including religious and allegorical subjects, historic figures, anatomical subjects, and individuals in media and popular culture. How have framings of the female body changed over time and what threads have carried through different generations? Join artist and independent scholar Allison Hill-Edgar for this lecture and discussion workshop examining how issues of race, class, nation building, power, religion, health, and sexuality have affected the representation of women in both high art and popular culture. Students will look at some of the major works of art that have both defined and defied concepts of the female subject, as well as individuals, artists, historians, philosophers, theorists, events, and movements that changed cultural thought about gender and the body.
*This is a lecture and discussion based workshop. No supplies are necessary, but notebook and writing utensil are recommended!
