Description

Brooklyn Brainery is accessible, community-driven, crowdsourced education.

We host casual classes for curious adults about all sorts of things: from physics to Australian desserts, from HTML to shorthand and just about every nook and cranny in between.

All of our course topics are dreamed up and suggested by you, and our teachers are a group of awesome people from around Brooklyn and the whole city. Anyone can teach--you just need a passion for the topic and a desire to share it with others. We do all the planning, taking care of sign ups, marketing, and materials, so you can focus on the important stuff (teaching, duh).

Classes are generally one or two weeks long, and we keep them as inexpensive as possible while still covering the overhead that comes with having a physical space.

What we teach?
If you can make it, read it or think it, we're probably open to it. It can be crafty, foody, academic-y, whatever you'd like. And though we think kids are cool, all our classes are aimed at adults.

What are classes like?
The easy answer is that every class is totally different (it's also true)!  Some of our teachers are pros at what they do, some are hobbyists, and some are curious people like yourselves who teach in order to explore a topic further in depth.

No matter what the class and who is teaching, our classes are laid back, fun, and participatory. No one will ever scowl at you for showing up late, and your involvement in class--whether through discussion or something hands on--is what makes them all the more awesome.

  • Ranji Smile: America's First Celebrity Chef

I wasn't thrilled with the class and that could be for several reasons that the instructor may not have control over. The slides were hard to read/decipher. Often times I couldn't tell where I should direct my focus - listen to the instructor or figure out what was on the screen. The instructor was knowledgable and engaging - however, I wish there was more of a beginning, middle and end to the class. At the end I felt like a conversation was left unfinished. I would urge the instructor to have a more solid idea of the story she wants to tell. Because we are not together in person - it is hard to feed off of the reactions of fellow students. The onus falls on the instructor to make things more engaging. All of the above is meant to be helpful and written with respect.

I absolutely loved this class! Kelly Laughlin is an incredible instructor who is clearly passionate about journaling. During this pandemic it gave me such joy to meet and interact with Kelly and all of the other participants. Thank you Kelly for inspiring me to journal once again.

The class with Eve was very good. Was well paces (although a bit fast) because there was so much information to put out there. It was told in a way for anyone just learning could understand. I enjoy the small size of it and breaking up into smaller zoom rooms. This was new for me. You might want to make it 3.5 hrs. But i would think about taking the full day course one day. Thanks!! Lynn

Great course! It was conducted remotely due to COVID-19, so things ran a little slower. However, very beneficial and I would certainly take another course on the subject matter and with Eve.
  • Launch Your Podcast

Reviewed by Dronile H. on 3/29/2020
Peach and Prosperity's daughter and dad team, Julia and Jeff, were really helpful when answering questions about how to start, launch, and promote a podcast. This class was interactive and allowed for participation. One thing I found really helpful, was that the instructors did a great job of providing a variety of resources - from free, easy to use resources to more advanced, paid options. It was really helpful to hear Julia and Jeff share how to get started without tons of equipment or a large investment, which made launching a podcast sound much more accessible. They also followed up with additional resources after the class and provide the slides in case anyone is interested in going back through the material. I'd definitely recommend this class to anyone looking to launch a podcast or learn more about podcasting.

We enjoyed the class very much! Julia and her Dad were terrific hosts. Their presentation was informative, and they invited interaction with the group. It was especially nice to connect with people when we’re all social distancing, and to learn something while sitting on the couch sipping a coffee! Thanks for offering online classes, loved it.

Would have liked to know how our thoughts could be expressed more creatively in our journals. Perhaps suggestions of photos or stamping or calligraphy could be tied into our writing.

  • The American Coffeehouse

    Anonymous review on 3/4/2020
Enjoyed the brief historical overview of coffee. Not too intense and not too text-heavy (session had a few videos, trivia questions, and group discussions throughout.) Day was gloomy so it was nice to just to relax with some warm (and complimentary!) coffee. Also we got a little chocolate at the end which was a sweet treat!

The class was relaxing, meditative, and non-intimidating. Kelly, the instructor, walks through the process in a fun and interactive way making it appear 'easy'. She and everyone in the class were kind and supportive of everyone's artistic journey and expression. It was a wonderful way to spend an evening connecting with new people. I thought the time would be too long, and it turns out I could have sat there for much longer!
