Our winter camp invites all kids who are out of school and ready to rock and roll into 2024 and go on a winter art making adventure full of colors, materials, and dramatic play using drawing, collage, painting, building, and improv. The first 30 minutes will be spent learning about dramatic arts through theater games and plays as a warm-up. Then, students will proceed to the art making portion of the session, where each class is devoted to a project exploring a technique related to the week’s focus. Here, each student will complete a project, and the remaining time will be open for students to explore personal interests by working independently or collaboratively to create another piece of artwork using a variety of materials and tools available in the studio.
Camp Schedule:
Week 1 (12/11-12/15)
See the Music
Students will learn to see the music through learning about artists such as Kandinsky, who translated sounds into colors, shapes, and lines and make a series of artwork from listening to music or from beats that students create on their own through clapping or singing.
Week 2 (12/18-12/22)
Surrealism & Surprise
Students will learn about Surrealism and explore making art that creates mystery and surprise using collage and drawing techniques used by Surrealist artists.
Week 3 (12/26-12/29)
3D & Geometry
Students will learn about 3D objects and geometry through making works of art using shapes and forms. In the drawing portion, students will create geometrical figures using basic shapes inspired by the holidays. In the building portion, they will construct objects and figures using recycled materials.
Week 4 (1/2-1/5)
Patterns
Students will explore patterns used in the Pop Art movement, and create both abstract and decorative art inspired by the art movement through drawing and painting.
Week 5 (1/8-1/12)
Animal
Students will learn to draw a series of animals from observation and from imagination, and create unique backgrounds for their animals. Clay option is open for students who want to create a three-dim
Week 6 (1/15-1/19)
Texture
Students will explore a variety of textures to make prints and experiment with printmaking to create works of art that show layers, repetitions, or a theme of student’s choice.
Week 7 (1/22-1/26)
Color Theory
Students will learn about different types of color groups and combinations to make collages of students’ chosen themes. More specifically, we will explore works of art made by artists such as Josef Albers to see how groups of color combinations can create certain visual effects.
Week 8 (1/29-2/2)
Clay
Students will explore and experiment with the properties of clay by creating a series of three-dimensional objects including coil pots and animals, and painting them afterwards.
NOTE: We recommend our students to wear clothes that they can get messy in.
