Cityscapes

In this course students will explore the structures of the man-made world that surround them through a variety of materials including both wet and dry media. Emphasis will be put on the importance of working from the ground up to establish structure and scale utilizing linear perspective. Working from a strong foundation, students will enliven the city spaces by incorporating light, shadow, and color to develop mood and atmosphere. 

This class is designed for students with any level of artistic training, and will include live demonstrations as well as one-on-one instruction.

Materials List:

• 2-3 Palette Knives (triangular metal shaped in a range of sizes from 1/2” to 3”) 
• Gamblin Gamsol (or a brand of Odorless inner - also called odorless mineral spirits)
• Refined Linseed Oil (recommended)
• Oil & thinner Cups (small, clean food jars)
• Paper Towels
• Pencils
• 18” x 24” pad of paper - 90lbs
• Ruler at least 24” long
• Triangle or T-square

Oil Paints: (suggested brands: Utrecht, Winsor & Newton, Rembrandt, Grumbacher, or Winton student grade are fine):

• Alizarin Crimson**
• Burnt Umber**
• Cadmium Red**
• Cadmium Yellow**
• Phthalo Green**
• Titanium White**
• Ultramarine Blue**
• Ivory Black*
• Yellow Ochre*
• Indian Yellow*
• Burnt Sienna*

Mediums (any of the following):

• Gamblin Galkyd, Lite, Slow-Dry, and/or Gel
• Neo-Megilp
• Cold Wax Medium
• Safflower, Linseed, and/or Poppy Oil

(I strongly recommend experimenting with mediums however deciding which mediums to use will be based on individual need and desired painting styles)

Palette:
Disposable paper palettes or any non-disposable palette. For paper, I recommend “Grey Matters” 9x12 disposable paper palette pad.

Brushes:

• 2-3 Palette/Painting Knives (triangular metal shaped)
• *I strongly recommend one small palette knife (1/2” or so), one medium (at least 2”) with
• rounded edges and one medium with straight edges
• At least 6 brushes: variety of bristle and soft in flat, round, and filbert, long handle for oil painting sizes 2, 4, 6, 8.
• 1 fan brush size between 6 and 12

Reference Imagery:

I recommend bringing several images of interesting streets, buildings, bridges, tunnels. It is not required but you may also bring a computer or tablet if you would like the option to manipulate reference images.
