To draw fabric well, you have to understand fabric. Fabric is unique in its characteristics because it is between the states of fluid and solid. Some textiles move more like a liquid, while some may resemble faceted mountains. Learn the "anatomy" of drapery and its visual behavior.
In this 6-week course, you will master drawing of folds by looking at the artwork of the Great Masters: Bernini, Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer, and Michelangelo to understand the technique behind their mastery. These artists brilliantly depicted cloth draped over different objects. You will produce several studies that will help you grasp the geometry of the fold and how its shape changes depending on the surface it is in contact with.
If you’ve ever struggled with expressing movement and action in your art, drapery can help with that! Drapery is not an “old-fashioned subject”; it is relevant to any project that involves people or interiors. When you learn how to make drapery live, move, breath, and hug, it will bring your drawings to life. Notice the human terms used to describe fabrics! That’s why we say that we study its behavior.

Course schedule
- Week 1: Learn how to approach realistic drawing any drapery. Sketch, take notes, while examining examples by classical Masters. Practice drawing simple drapery and learn how to suggest the basic form it hides
- Week 2: Follow Teacher’s demonstration on how to draw two types of drapery. Learn the key features of expressing the weight and character of the specific material.
- Week 3: Learn from Bernini, Leonardo da Vinci and Degas their techniques for how to draw fabrics. Begin your drawing on tonal paper.
- Week 4: Finish the drawing from week 3. Start a new drawing of a veil-like material, working from an antique sculpture. Learn how to capture the way the material flows on the body.
- Week 5: Continue the drawing in the classical tradition, with the focus on the technical aspects: direction of shading, depth of folds, shadows and highlights, while minding the body it is wrapped around. You will receive special tips for each step.
- Week 6: Complete your drawing by refining it with finishing touches. Participant discussion and Teacher’s feedback on the finished drawings.
