Class Description

Description

Full Course: What is the Essence of Technology? How does Technology Inform the Human Condition?

In this class session, we will explore Martin Heidegger's philosophical essay "The Question Concerning Technology" and watch the film "Her" directed by Spike Jonze. This foundational work and the thought-provoking film will provide a basis for understanding the complex relationship between technology and humanity throughout the series.

Heidegger's essay delves into the essence of technology, examining its impact on human beings and its role in shaping our understanding of the world. The film "Her" offers a poignant exploration of the intersection of technology, human relationships, and personal identity. As we discuss the essay and film, we will grapple with Heidegger's ideas on the nature of technology, its influence on our perception of reality, and the ways in which it transforms our relationship with the environment, society, and ourselves.

In this session, we will engage in lively discussions and critical reflections, guided by the core question: "How does technology shape our understanding of the human condition?" To help us explore this question, we will consider the following discussion questions:

  • How does technology influence the way we perceive and define ourselves and our relationships with others?
  • In what ways does technology affect our connection to the natural world and our understanding of our place within it?
  • How do advancements in technology challenge traditional notions of human identity and consciousness?
  • What are the ethical implications and potential consequences of embracing technology in various aspects of our lives?
  • How can we harness the power of technology to enhance our lives, while also being mindful of its potential pitfalls and negative effects?

Reading and Film List:

  • "The Question Concerning Technology" by Martin Heidegger: A philosophical essay delving into the essence of technology, its impact on human beings, and its role in shaping our understanding of the world.
  • "Her" directed by Spike Jonze: A critically acclaimed film that explores the evolving relationship between a man and an advanced operating system, raising questions about the nature of love, consciousness, and the impact of technology on our lives.

Join us for this stimulating class session as we embark on a journey to explore the profound ways in which technology impacts our lives, our identities, and our understanding of the world around us. Through thoughtful discussions and contemplation of Heidegger's insights and the film "Her," we will lay the groundwork for a deeper examination of technology's influence on the human condition.
