Class Description

Description

This foundational SQL course establishes essential competencies in database querying through immersive practical training. You will develop proficiency in navigating the tables, columns, and rows stored within database systems and gain skills to write and execute SQL queries that systematically extract and organize information for analysis. Working with practical, hands-on exercises guided by experienced instruction, you will build a comprehensive understanding of relational database architecture fundamentals and develop fluency in writing functional SQL code.

You will master the foundational SELECT statement syntax for retrieving specific columns from database tables and develop filtering techniques using WHERE conditions combined with AND/OR logic, IN operators, and NOT operators. You will learn to apply wildcard pattern matching as well as mathematical comparison operators, including equals, greater than, and less than, to precisely identify the data you need. You will develop the ability to consolidate information from multiple related tables through inner JOIN operations.

Upon successful completion of this foundational hands-on course, you will possess the capability to write basic SQL queries compatible with Microsoft SQL Server. You will become proficient with SQL Server Management Studio, a free graphical interface tool for database exploration and query execution. The fundamental concepts and syntax patterns you learn through SQL Server training transfer directly to other SQL database systems, including Microsoft Access, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and others, with only minor syntax variations required.

Key Learning Outcomes at a Glance:

  • Navigating and exploring information stored in a database, including tables, columns, rows, and data relationships, using the graphical interface of SQL Server Management Studio (Microsoft's free database application)
  • Writing SQL queries that systematically retrieve specific data from database tables
  • Understanding and applying essential SQL clauses, including SELECT and FROM
  • Using WHERE, AND/OR, IN, and NOT operators to filter and restrict query results
  • Implementing wildcard patterns and mathematical comparison operators, including equals, greater than, less than, and similar functions
  • Combining and merging information from multiple related tables using inner JOIN operations

Comprehensive Course Curriculum

  • SQL and Database Architecture Foundations
    • Core concepts underlying SQL and relational database design
    • Navigating databases and writing SQL statements using the free SQL Server Management Studio application
  • Developing Functional SQL Queries
    • Constructing SELECT statements for data retrieval
    • Filtering and restricting query results using multiple criteria
  • Combining Data from Multiple Tables with JOIN Operations
    • Understanding relational connections between tables
    • Using JOIN operations to combine and correlate data

Mastering Database Fundamentals: Writing Database Queries with SQL

SQL represents the most widely-adopted programming language for database systems globally. This comprehensive foundation course covers essential concepts in relational database design, Microsoft SQL Server architecture, and SQL query language fundamentals. You will understand how databases organize and store data within structured tables and develop the skills to write queries that unlock and analyze that information.

Your experienced instructor will guide you systematically through a comprehensive range of query types, including pattern-matching filters and advanced multi-table queries using both inner and outer join operations. At the course conclusion, you will apply your newly-acquired skills through a series of practical exercises and hands-on activities. Your course workbook provides detailed step-by-step instructions for each activity, serving as a reference resource for continued skill development at your workplace or home.

Competencies You Will Gain Upon Course Completion:

  • Navigate and explore information stored within a database using the SQL Server Management Studio interface
  • Write straightforward SQL queries that retrieve specific data from database tables
  • Effectively use essential SQL clauses and implement filtering strategies

Important Course Prerequisite Note:
Students should demonstrate basic computer literacy and proficiency. No prior database or programming experience is required to succeed in this course.
