Description

Textile Arts Center (TAC) is a NYC-based resource facility dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of textiles through creative educational programs for children and adults. At TAC, we aspire to unify the textile community and advocate for the handmade by providing accessible, skills-based classes that reinvigorate engagement with traditional crafts. Techniques like weaving, sewing, and dyeing are practical, connective, and process-driven -- common denominators for designers, artists, and creative practitioners around the world. Because these activities are so widely used, they help to foster community and bring creativity back into our daily lives. They are part of our collective history and vital to our ongoing expressions of design, art, and culture.

We appreciate the unique values of textile arts and want to expand opportunities for new practitioners to engage with the medium. Participatory learning is the foundation of our model and enables students from all backgrounds to make meaningful contributions to a growing community of fiber artists. Workshops, courses, events, and special programs at TAC allow professionals and novices alike to explore their creative ingenuity through handcraft processes. By engaging with groups ranging from newcomers to experts, we increase the positive social impact of textile arts and nurture innovations and leadership in the field.

History

Textile Arts Center was founded in 2009 in Brooklyn, NY. Its main workshop hosts youth and adult programs in a wide range of media. The Brooklyn location also houses the Artists in Residency program, and is home to Sewing Seeds, a program dedicated to the dissemination of accurate information on natural dyes.  In 2011, TAC opened the doors of its Manhattan studio, which hosts youth and adult programs, as well as textile-related events.

  • Basket Weaving

What a wonderful two weekends of basket weaving. The teacher was extremely good a teaching on zoom. I learned two different basket techniques - a woven basket and a coil basket - I am excited to keep working on my technique for those styles and modifications she discussed with us. So fun to meet people across the country interested in learning a craft - and the other students were very talented! The instructor helped us share just enough of our own lives to bring us together as a group. Makes such a fun environment in which to learn.
  • Natural Dyeing

Teacher knowledgeable but total class time only 3-4hrs, not 6-hr total as advertised. Teacher reluctant to answer questions even though class was only 1 hr (not 3 hrs) in final session. Perhaps class time & price should be adjusted accordingly.
  • Bead Embroidery

Excellent class with a knowledgeable teacher. Thoroughly reviewed natural dyeing techniques and spent hours doing various types of hand dyeing. At the end of the class we each had a book of documented samples and several yards of cloth. Wonderful!!
  • One Day Intensive: Bead Weaving

The class was really good ... it was my first time heading ever. Most of the class had not beaded before so a bit more instruction or demonstration or video may have been helpful to get started. But once started it was really fun.

It was a nice experience learning the basics of working with leather. Lix is a fun and a great teacher, now I feel confident to start fabricating my own pieces
  • Sewing 201: Draping

Teacher was good. Wish that it was tailored for knits. Wish it had a goal of a final finished piece. It felt like that after this class that they would offer another class to help finish the piece I designed and had a pattern for. Although they offer studio hours other than class time, it did not have a teacher to help you along.
  • Large Format Marbling (Weekend Intensive)

Perfect class. The first 2/3 of the class we learned a bunch of different techniques, which we then incorporated our own tapestry to take home and finish. It was exactly what I was looking for to get started on my personal projects. Highly recommend if you're curious about how this stuff is done.

I’ve taken embroidery classes before but I learned stitches I’d never known in this one. Cate was a great teacher and very responsive to the class. I would love for her to offer a second part to this class, with more stitches and letting us work on a first design.

EXTREMELY informative. I've taken over 3 Suminagashi marbling classes, this has to take the cake. I came away with +10 techniques to add to my Suminagashi marbling toolbox. I highly recommend purchasing the extra yards of fabric. So much freedom in this class and time to explore using the techniques and create great pieces.

It was a great class. Laura, the instructor, was extremely patient and had a calming disposition. After demonstrating a technique or process, she individually coached each of the students as we practiced on the machines. Definitely looking to take another class with her.
